The 5th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival in 2024 marked a new chapter in the festival’s artistic and cultural journey — an edition shaped by greater maturity, broader international presence, and a cinematic vision that opened its screen to stories arriving from different cultures, languages, and geographies under the theme:
“A Journey Through World Cultures.”
This edition was not merely a space for screening films, but a meeting point for human stories from around the world. On one screen, audiences encountered films carrying the memory of nations and exploring contemporary questions of war, exile, identity, freedom, justice, and human connection. Through this diversity, the festival continued building its identity as a cinematic platform that believes film can create dialogue beyond political, geographical, and linguistic borders.
The fifth edition was dedicated to the late Kurdish filmmaker Taha Karimi, one of the important Kurdish cinematic voices associated with humanistic cinema and visual storytelling rooted in memory, exile, and Kurdish identity. The tribute reflected the festival’s ongoing commitment to honoring filmmakers who contributed to strengthening the presence of Kurdish cinema within the international film landscape.
The festival welcomed filmmakers, directors, actors, and film critics from different parts of the world, alongside a growing presence of independent productions and emerging visual experiences. The selected works ranged across narrative, documentary, and animated cinema, presenting artistic approaches that reflected both the evolution of independent filmmaking and the boldness of new cinematic voices engaging with contemporary human realities.
On an organizational and artistic level, the fifth edition represented a significant development in the festival’s journey, through the expansion of its international participation, the evolution of its cinematic program, and the strengthening of its artistic identity. These developments reinforced the Kobani International Film Festival as one of the independent festivals that succeeded, within a relatively short time, in establishing a clear cultural and cinematic voice centered around diversity, freedom, and cinema from the margins.
In its fifth edition, the Kobani International Film Festival continued defending cinema as a universal human language — a space for free expression and a home for films searching for humanity amid the profound transformations shaping today’s world.
