Adalet R. Garmiany is a Kurdish filmmaker, writer, artist, curator, and cultural strategist whose work exists at the intersection of cinema, contemporary art, and cultural engagement within conflict and post-conflict societies. Over the past twenty-five years, he has developed an extensive body of experience working across the fields of culture, visual arts, human rights, and independent artistic practice throughout the Middle East and internationally.
He is the founding director of ArtRole, one of the leading independent cultural and artistic platforms in Kurdistan and Iraq, through which he has contributed to projects connecting cinema, visual arts, education, and community-based cultural initiatives, with a particular focus on regions shaped by war, displacement, and political transformation.
Garmiany’s artistic and cinematic approach blends contemporary visual language with human-centered storytelling and cultural research, often exploring questions of identity, collective memory, social transformation, and the role of art within fragile societies.
Alongside his work as a filmmaker and curator, he has served as a consultant on projects related to the role of art and culture in conflict and post-conflict zones, collaborating with NGOs, educational institutions, human rights organizations, and cultural platforms across Europe, the United States, and various international communities.
His practice is distinguished by its fusion of cinematic sensitivity, visual experimentation, and cultural dialogue, where art becomes a space for reflection on humanity, memory, and cultural justice.
As a Jury Member of the 5th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2024 — the Taha Karimi Edition, held under the theme “A Journey Through World Cultures” — Garmiany brings a perspective shaped by cinema, contemporary art, and intercultural dialogue, reflecting the festival’s commitment to diverse human experiences and artistic exchange across borders.
