Rezan Farman

Narrative Films Section

Rezan Farman is a Syrian-Kurdish actor and theatre artist whose artistic journey was shaped between theatre, everyday life, exile, and the search for human meaning within societies marked by transformation and conflict. His artistic approach exists close to humanistic theatre and social cinema, where ordinary characters and marginal lives become cinematic reflections of memory, survival, identity, and the pursuit of freedom.

Born and raised in the city of Qamishli in northern Syria, Farman grew up within a culturally diverse environment whose social and visual contradictions later became deeply embedded in his artistic sensibility and character work. From an early age, he experienced hardship, social marginalization, and labor-intensive work before theatre opened a different path for him — a world built around language, movement, imagination, and self-discovery.

His artistic journey began on stage through the theatre director Adel Ibrahim, who introduced him to acting and theatrical performance. He later collaborated with several Syrian and Kurdish theatre directors, including:
• Walid Omar
• Hanna Issa
• Roni Zaza

Together, they developed theatrical productions for adults and children, focusing on human-centered theatre and educational performance rooted in everyday life and social reality.

Children’s theatre became a central part of his artistic identity, where he approached performance as a space for imagination, emotional awareness, and visual storytelling. Through numerous productions, he received honorary recognitions and symbolic awards within the Syrian theatre scene.

Later, Farman moved to Damascus, where he participated in theatre productions and appeared in several Syrian historical television series, alongside performances and festival activities across different Syrian cities.

Following the outbreak of the Syrian war, he relocated to Germany, where he continued his artistic journey within a new cultural landscape that connected theatre, cinema, and intercultural artistic work. There, he participated in theatrical performances and workshops alongside German, Kurdish, and Arab artists, while also contributing to independent short film projects and continuing to develop his performance language within multicultural artistic spaces.

His artistic style is distinguished by emotional honesty, natural presence, and attention to subtle human details, combining the intimacy of realist theatre with the visual sensitivity of socially engaged cinema.

As a member of the Selection & Preliminary Evaluation Committee — Narrative Films Section — at the 5th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2024, the Taha Karimi Edition, held under the theme “A Journey Through World Cultures” — Rezan Farman represents an artistic voice emerging from the intersection of theatre, cinema, exile, and lived human experience, contributing a perspective deeply connected to memory, identity, and social transformation.
