Jwan Abdo is a Syrian-Kurdish filmmaker, producer, and actor whose cinematic journey emerged from experiences shaped by war, migration, and displacement, transforming cinema into a personal space for memory, survival, and visual storytelling rooted in human experience.
Born in Aleppo in 1996, Abdo moved to Istanbul following the war in Syria, where he began working in filmmaking and participated in several short films and documentary projects. One of the most significant stages in his artistic path was his participation in the documentary The Boy with a Camera, based on parts of his own life story. The film was screened at several international festivals and received multiple awards.
In 2017, he relocated to Germany and continued developing his independent cinematic voice. He directed the short film Parallel, which received a Special Mention at the Swiss Bern Festival and was screened in various cinemas and international festivals. In 2021, he directed Memory Mirrors in Berlin, continuing his exploration of memory, identity, and visual narration through a contemporary humanistic cinematic language.
His experience extends across directing, producing, acting, and behind-the-camera work. His films and projects participated in festivals and screenings across Germany, Turkey, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom, Greece, and Iraq, including:
• Kurdische Filmfestival Berlin
• Lift-Off Sessions @ Pinewood Studios
• EthnoKino Film Festival
• Ankara International Film Festival
• Marmaris Short Film Festival
Abdo’s cinematic approach focuses on memory, migration, identity, and the fragile relationship between human beings and displacement, within a visual style rooted in realism and intimate observation of everyday human details.
As a member of the Selection & Preliminary Evaluation Committee — Narrative Films Section — at the 5th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2024, the Taha Karimi Edition, held under the theme “A Journey Through World Cultures” — Jwan Abdo represents a young cinematic voice shaped between exile, war, and independent cinema, contributing a perspective open to new human stories and contemporary visual experiences across cultures.
