Jano Rosebiani is a Kurdish-American writer, director, and editor whose films have received international acclaim across four continents. His feature Jiyan — described by Variety as “moving, often poetic testimony” — won numerous international festival awards and earned four-star ratings from BBC World and The Guardian. The film was also selected by Japan’s Ministry of Education for distribution to middle and high schools across the country. His films Chaplin of the Mountains (a New York Times Critics’ Pick) and One Candle, Two Candles (long-listed for the Golden Globe Award) received critical praise from The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter, and the New York Post. He has also directed several documentaries on Kurdish history, including Saddam’s Mass Graves and Chemical Ali’s Anfal, which toured the United States following screenings in Washington and at the United Nations. His earlier films include Dance of the Pendulum, a dark comedy about screenplay writers entangled with their own characters.

Critics have compared his work to that of Mira Nair, Jafar Panahi, and Abbas Kiarostami, noting his gift for cross-cultural storytelling with warmth, humor, and humanity. One reviewer described scenes from his films as evocative of the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez.
