Overview

Award Rationale

Gianna Badiali receives the Best Cinematography award for giving THREE KEENINGS a visual language that is both lyrical and narratively precise. The images do more than illustrate the story; they carry its emotional movement and reveal what the central character is unable to express directly.

The vast and rugged landscapes of Northern Ireland are not treated as picturesque backgrounds. They become visual reflections of Ian’s inner state: solitary and exposed, yet marked by a deep and unspoiled beauty. The relationship between the human figure and the surrounding landscape creates a continuous dialogue between private emotion and place.

Badiali photographs faces with respectful, almost documentary intimacy, allowing humour, grief, and hesitation to coexist within the frame. The final bus-stop sequence demonstrates particular psychological sensitivity, bringing composition, distance, and emotional observation together with remarkable restraint.

Synopsis

Ian is a struggling actor who finds himself working in the unconventional role of a professional mourner. As he travels through the Northern Irish countryside, he performs at funerals for people he never knew.

Moving through the humour and heartache of the local funeral circuit, Ian’s carefully maintained mask of indifference gradually begins to slip.
