Award: Best Cinematography Award – 6th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2025 “Here the Story Begins”
The film received the Best Cinematography Award for its experimental visual treatment that transforms light, shadow, and body movement into an independent cinematic language, creating a visually immersive experience where the image itself becomes the center of narration.
Synopsis:
Inside an almost abstract visual space, the human body becomes a silent territory suspended between light and darkness. Shadows move across the skin like fragments of memory, fear, and desire, while the body itself turns into a visual language attempting to express what words cannot.
Rather than relying on traditional storytelling, the film constructs its experience through visual rhythm, movement, texture, and composition, creating a meditative atmosphere closer to a cinematic poem than a conventional narrative film.
Every frame functions like a moving painting in which skin becomes a surface for visual expression and light transforms into a dramatic element revealing emotional fragility and inner isolation. As the image slowly dissolves into darkness, the film leaves behind a haunting visual resonance that exceeds its short duration.
About the Directors:
Yu Yiming and Zhang Yihan are Chinese filmmakers and visual artists whose work explores the intersection of cinema, performance art, and contemporary visual composition. Their projects focus on the relationship between body, perception, and identity, using light, movement, and color as primary storytelling tools.
The Skin Speaks represents a cinematic experiment driven by pure imagery rather than dialogue, exploring the emotional and psychological power of visual composition.
