Taher Mesfek is an Algerian academic, film critic, journalist, and researcher whose work moves between cinema, literature, media studies, and cultural journalism.
He studied Communication and Media before completing a Master’s degree in Arabic Language and Literature with a specialization in the novel, later continuing academic research focused on the relationship between cinema and literature through doctoral studies on film adaptation and cinematic narrative.
Alongside his academic background, Mesfek specialized in film directing and documentary cinema and became active in cinematic criticism, festival journalism, and Arab film culture.
Over the years, he contributed to the supervision and moderation of several filmmaking workshops dedicated to short and feature films, particularly within the Oran International Arabic Film Festival across multiple editions.
He also worked as a correspondent and film journalist for Arab and international media platforms covering cinema, festivals, and contemporary visual culture, and served as Director of the Maghreb and Europe Office for Cinematograph Magazine, a publication dedicated to cinema and film industries in the Arab world and internationally.
Mesfek participated in numerous international festivals and cinematic events as journalist, jury member, guest of honor, and film-selection contributor, including:
Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Cairo International Film Festival, Luxor African Film Festival, and several Arab and African cinema festivals across Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, and Europe.
His critical and cinematic perspective combines academic research with practical engagement in independent cinema, documentary storytelling, and Arab film criticism, with particular interest in the relationship between image, literature, identity, and contemporary social reality.
At the 1st edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2020, Taher Mesfek participated as a member of the Selection Committee, contributing a perspective shaped by cinematic criticism, academic research, and international festival experience.
