Jean Houro is a Syrian-German filmmaker, actor, and visual storyteller whose artistic journey moves between independent cinema, theater, and television, shaped by experiences across Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and Germany. His work is strongly connected to visual atmosphere, human emotion, and stories rooted in displacement, identity, and social transformation.
He began his artistic path in theater in the city of Aleppo before studying film directing at the Academy of Cinematic and Theatrical Sciences in Beirut between 2009 and 2011.
His experience later expanded across acting, directing, cinematography, and screenwriting, working between 2014 and 2017 as an independent filmmaker in Germany, Turkey, and Lebanon. Through these multidisciplinary experiences, he developed a cinematic language rooted in emotional realism, visual rhythm, and intimate storytelling.
Between 2017 and 2021, Houro collaborated with the German production company Polyphon Film- und Fernsehgesellschaft, contributing to film and television productions within directing, camera, and lighting departments. This period strengthened his practical experience within European productions and deepened his relationship with cinematic image construction and collaborative filmmaking.
His artistic approach is characterized by a strong attention to visual detail, emotional pacing, and the relationship between image and silence, often focusing on fragile human experiences, exile, and psychological transformation through a realistic and intimate cinematic lens.
At the 6th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2025, Jean Houro serves as Head of the Selection & Preliminary Evaluation Committee, supervising the film viewing and evaluation process across the festival’s different sections.
