Adnan Osman

Adnan Osman is a Kurdish filmmaker, screenwriter, and cinematographer from Kurdistan-Iraq, recognized as one of the prominent voices of independent Kurdish cinema through a cinematic journey that combines directing, cinematography, screenwriting, television, and cultural production within a human-centered and socially engaged visual approach.

He studied film directing at the College of Fine Arts at Salahaddin University before becoming active across cinema, television, cultural journalism, and film criticism. Alongside his filmmaking career, he also worked for several years as a cinema instructor at the College of Fine Arts, contributing to the development of young cinematic talents and independent visual storytelling.

His work spans fiction films, documentaries, and television productions. Over the years, he directed more than 13 short films in addition to feature-length and television projects, including:
• Triangle of the Wolf
• Kingdom of Ruins
• The Price of Freedom

In parallel with his directing career, Osman collaborated with local and international television networks as a cinematographer, producer, and director, contributing to documentary productions and visual reports for global broadcasters such as:
• BBC
• CNN

His cinematic style is deeply rooted in social realism and human-centered storytelling, often focusing on Kurdish identity, collective memory, marginalized characters, and the relationship between people, place, and political transformation.

Throughout his career, he participated in numerous Kurdish, Iraqi, Arab, and international film festivals both as a filmmaker and as jury president or jury member. His films received several awards, including:

• Best Kurdish Film
• Best Screenplay

At the 5th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2024 — the Taha Karimi Edition, held under the theme “A Journey Through World Cultures” — Adnan Osman served as Head of the Selection & Preliminary Evaluation Committee, supervising the viewing, evaluation, and selection process across the festival’s various sections during an edition marked by wide international participation and cultural diversity.

His presence within the festival reflects a cinematic vision rooted in independent humanistic cinema and openness toward new cinematic voices and visual experiences emerging from different cultures and realities around the world.
