Shahram Qadir Ali is a Kurdish filmmaker, photographer, researcher, and academic born in Ranya, Iraqi Kurdistan. He has lived in Sweden since 1993 and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Art History from Södertörn University in Sweden. He has also worked as a university lecturer at Salahaddin University in Erbil.
He began making short films in 2005, developing a body of work across fiction and documentary cinema. His early films include Sarab and The Confessor, alongside documentaries such as Seeking the Voice and Iranian Anger and Love. In 2010, he made the documentary Fath e Shab in Paris, an international artistic collaboration involving Iranian artists, soloists from the French Orchestre Symphonique des Solistes, and a South African choir.
In Sweden, he directed The Emigrated Birds in 2012, which was screened in Germany and Sweden, followed by I Named You Afarin in 2014.
His practice combines filmmaking, cinematography, screenwriting, and the academic study of art, alongside professional experience in editing and visual image-making, giving him a perspective that connects cinematic aesthetics with an understanding of visual and artistic structure.
At the 7th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2026, Shahram Qadir Ali serves as an Artistic & Programming Committee Member, contributing his experience in cinema, photography, and art history.
