Nasser Wannous

Artistic & Programming Committee Member

Nasser Wannous is a Syrian film and theatre critic, researcher, editor, and translator. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Literature and Criticism from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus, graduating in 1988. Since then, his career has brought together film and theatre criticism, cultural research, journalism, editing, and translation from English into Arabic.

From 1998 to 2003, he served on the editorial board of Al-Hayat Al-Cinemaiya (Cinematic Life), published by the General Organization for Cinema in Damascus. His media career later took him to Tehran, Moscow, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, where he worked as an editor, translator, and managing editor. He also founded and edited the cinema website Third World Cinema.

Wannous has an extensive body of work in film and theatre writing and translation. His translations include Documentary Filmmaking: A Practical Guide to Planning, Filming, and Editing and Film Directing: Techniques and Aesthetics, as well as a book on the cinema of Satyajit Ray and other works on theatre and the arts. His own publications include Investigative Documentary Film: A Theoretical Introduction and Practical Models. He has also written and translated hundreds of articles and studies published across Arab newspapers, magazines, and online platforms.

His long-standing engagement with film criticism, research, and translation gives him an extensive understanding of cinematic language, film structure, and the artistic and cultural contexts in which films are created.

At the 7th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2026, Nasser Wannous serves as an Artistic & Programming Committee Member, contributing his experience in film criticism, research, writing, and translation.
