Hama Swar Aziz is a Kurdish art and theatre critic, born in Erbil in 1969. He began his artistic career in 1985 and has developed extensive experience across theatre, drama, artistic criticism, and film criticism. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and was among the founding members of the Erbil Experimental Theatre Group.
His engagement with film criticism began in 1992, when he published his first critical article on the film Gala Gurg. He writes in both Kurdish and Arabic and is the author of six books focusing on theatre and drama. He also serves as Managing Editor of Theatre Magazine.
Aziz serves as Secretary of the Kurdistan Artists Syndicate – Erbil Branch and is a member of the Iraqi Critics Association. Throughout his career, he has participated in dozens of festivals across Kurdistan, Iraq, and the Arab world and has served on screening, evaluation, and criticism committees at numerous local, Iraqi, and Arab festivals.
His long-standing experience across criticism, theatre, drama, and cinema provides him with an analytical perspective on cinematic works, their structure, and artistic language.
At the 7th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2026, Hama Swar Aziz serves as an Artistic & Programming Committee Member, contributing his extensive experience in artistic and film criticism and evaluation.
