Kamel Qader Hamid

Kamel Qader Hamid is an Iraqi-Kurdish filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and photographer born in Kirkuk in 1964. His artistic journey developed through independent cinema, theater, television, and photographic work within the Kurdish and Iraqi cultural scene.

After completing secondary school in 1981, he applied to the College of Fine Arts but was denied admission due to political circumstances at the time. Despite this, he continued pursuing artistic and cinematic work independently.

His first theatrical experience began in 1980 through the play File No. 26 as actor, before expanding his activities toward photography, television, and filmmaking.

In 1982, he worked at the Rahimawa Youth Center in Kirkuk as supervisor of the photography department, organizing workshops and training students in camera operation, film development, and photographic printing.

Between 1986 and 1987, he graduated from the Institute of Administration in Nasiriyah with a diploma in accounting, while continuing his parallel engagement with cinema and visual arts.

Throughout his artistic career, Hamid wrote several short film screenplays and became member of multiple artistic and cinematic organizations, including:
• Iraqi Artists Union
• Kurdistan Artists Union
• Arab Cultural Arts Foundation – Iraq
• NCO – Cinema of Peoples Organization
• Kirkuk Cinema House

He also participated in screenplay competitions organized by Kafal Organization during its first and second editions with the short film scripts The Game and The Poor, receiving certificates of appreciation.

In television, he contributed to more than eighty television segments and productions for Kirkuk TV as actor and photographer, in addition to participating in programs such as Teroz.

His cinematic works participated in several local and international festivals, including:
• The 3rd Anfal Short Film Festival organized by Rika TV with his short film Beneath the Earth
• Souss International Short Film Festival – Morocco (2014)
• Al-Samawa International Short Film Festival
• Ouarzazate Short Film Festival – Morocco (2016)

Among his cinematic works are:
• Beneath the Earth
• The Decision
• YARi
• TAWAN
• Hemay Arami (Documentary)

where he worked as writer and director, in addition to participating as actor and photographer in the feature film The Law directed by Dilawar Abdullah.

His artistic approach reflects a strong connection to independent Kurdish cinema, everyday social realities, and visual storytelling emerging from local cultural experiences.

At the 1st edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2020, Kamel Qader Hamid participated as a member of the Jury Committee, contributing a perspective shaped by independent filmmaking, photography, and local cinematic experience.
