Kareem Abeed is a Syrian film producer and independent visual storyteller currently based in Canada, recognized internationally through his work in documentary cinema emerging from the Syrian experience and contemporary human-centered storytelling shaped by war, memory, and survival.
Born in Aleppo, Abeed originally studied Electronics and Communications Engineering before turning toward cinema and documentary production following the outbreak of the Syrian war in 2011, a transition that profoundly shaped his artistic and cinematic path.
He gained international recognition as producer of the documentary feature Last Men in Aleppo (2017), directed by Feras Fayyad, which documented the lives of the White Helmets rescue volunteers during the siege of Aleppo. The film became the first Syrian documentary nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 90th Academy Awards in 2018.
The film received major international recognition and awards, including:
• Academy Award Nomination — Best Documentary Feature
• Emmy Award recognition
• Asia Pacific Screen Award
• Sundance Film Festival recognition
Abeed also worked on the documentary short One Day in Aleppo, continuing his cinematic focus on human stories emerging from conflict zones and societies under siege.
Over the years, his work evolved between documentary production, independent visual storytelling, and international collaborations connected to socially engaged cinema and documentary filmmaking. His cinematic approach is closely connected to realism, human fragility, memory, and the ethical responsibility of image-making within conflict environments.
Currently based in Winnipeg, Canada, Abeed continues his work through documentary cinema and independent film initiatives, while contributing to projects connected to emerging filmmakers and Syrian visual narratives in exile.
His cinematic language combines documentary realism with emotionally driven storytelling and observational visual approaches rooted in lived human experiences and social transformation.
As a member of the Selection & Preliminary Evaluation Committee — Narrative Films Section — at the 5th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2024, the Taha Karimi Edition, held under the theme “A Journey Through World Cultures” — Kareem Abeed contributes a perspective shaped by independent cinema, documentary storytelling, and internationally recognized Syrian visual narratives.
