Jwan Abdo is a Syrian-Kurdish filmmaker, producer, and actor based in Germany. His artistic journey belongs to a generation of independent filmmakers shaped by war, exile, migration, and personal memory, transforming lived experiences into cinematic language and human-centered visual storytelling.
Born in Aleppo in 1996, he began his filmmaking path after moving to Istanbul following the war in Syria, where he worked on several short films and independent productions. He gained wider attention through the documentary The Boy with a Camera, based on his own life story, which was screened at several international festivals and received multiple awards.
After relocating to Germany, Abdo continued developing his cinematic work within the landscape of independent European cinema. His short film Parallel received a Special Mention at the Bern Film Festival in Switzerland and was screened in various cinemas and film festivals across Europe. In 2021, he directed Memory Mirrors in Berlin with support from German cultural and artistic institutions.
His films often explore themes of exile, identity, memory, and displacement through emotionally grounded storytelling, visual realism, and intimate character-driven narratives.
Throughout his career, he participated in numerous film festivals in Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Italy, and the United Kingdom, both as a filmmaker and actor, with works presented across several international cinematic platforms.
At the 4th edition of the Kobani International Film Festival 2023, Jwan Abdo participated as a member of the Narrative Films Selection Committee, representing a young generation of filmmakers working within contemporary independent cinema.
